April 30, 2026 -The Decatur Fire Department is being recognized at the state level after reaching a major milestone aimed at improving safety across the community.

Representatives from the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal visited Decatur to honor the department for installing 1,000 smoke alarms in homes throughout the city. The effort is part of the “Be Alarmed!” Smoke Alarm Installation Program.

Illinois State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow said the recognition is significant as Decatur is the only the eigth department in the state to reach that milestone. “Having a department that is committed to make sure their community is as safe as possible is a big deal. At the State Fire Marshall’s office, we would love to have one of these milestones every week.”

Decatur Fire Deputy Chief Brian Lockwood said that the Decatur Fire Department has made an effort to install fire alarms in any homes they have found in need during a medical or fire call.

Officials say working smoke alarms are one of the most effective tools for preventing fire-related deaths and injuries, and efforts like this help ensure more homes are protected.
