May 31, 2026 – Richland Community College and the Children’s Museum of Illinois are partnering to develop a new Teaching Kitchen aimed at providing hands-on learning opportunities for children and families while introducing them to educational and career pathways.

The Richland Community College Board of Trustees approved the partnership in April. The initiative includes a $60,000 capital investment to help construct the Teaching Kitchen, a $125,000 commitment over five years to support programming, and $5,000 for career pathway signage highlighting workforce connections.

According to Richland officials, the Teaching Kitchen will offer interactive experiences focused on culinary skills, nutrition, science, and career exploration. The space is designed to connect children and families with educational opportunities and increase awareness of workforce pathways through hands-on activities.

Richland Community College President Dr. Cristobal Valdez said the partnership reflects the college’s commitment to expanding learning opportunities beyond the classroom and strengthening connections between education, workforce development, and the community.

Children’s Museum of Illinois Executive Director Rikki Parker said the project will provide families with opportunities to learn and create together while exposing children to potential future careers.

Construction of the Teaching Kitchen is expected to continue throughout the summer.
