June 22, 2023 – Superintendent Dr. Rochelle Clark and Board President Bill Clevenger of DPS61 joined Byers & Co. to talk about last night’s special school board meeting and a temporary plan for Dennis students in the next school year.

In the administration’s plan introduced to the board yesterday evening, Dennis’ seventh and eighth graders will be housed in a wing of Stephen Decatur Middle School, and the remaining kindergarten through sixth grade students will learn at Garfield Learning Academy. Garfield’s building is not large enough to house all of the students the district has proposed to assign to that campus, so administration proposed placing six modular classrooms and a restroom on Garfield’s grounds. The district said they expect to need these units for more than just next school year.

Alternative instruction is currently held for kindergarten through 12th grade students at Garfield. Those students will also be moved to a wing of Stephen Decatur Middle School and will not mix with other students, the district said.
