June 29, 2023 – Area police departments, including the Decatur Police Department and Illinois State Police, are encouraging safe driving habits throughout the Independence Day weekend through a variety of enforcement initiatives.
Earlier this month, DPD announced increased traffic enforcement until the morning of July 5, specifically looking to decrease the number of impaired and unbuckled drivers on the road. Today, Illinois State Police announced partnerships with local departments across the state for similar enforcement efforts through a federally-funded campaign dubbed “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
“Impaired driving is illegal, dangerous and often deadly,” said Steve Travia, the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Director of Highways Project Implementation. “Driving impaired by any substance puts you and the lives of others at risk.”
Officers throughout the city and state will strongly enforce seat belt, speeding and other traffic laws as part of these initiatives. ISP and local departments said they will also work to put an end to impaired driving, providing the following tips for those who come into contact with alcohol or other impairing substances.
- If planning to use any impairing substance, give keys to a sober driver or call a taxi or rideshare service to get home.
- Contact law enforcement if an impaired driver is on the road.
- Remind friends to never get in a vehicle with an impaired driver or drive impaired themselves.
“We all want to celebrate our nation’s birthday this Fourth of July, but make sure to do it responsibly,” said Col. Margaret McGreal, ISP’s Division of Patrol Deputy Director. “With the increased holiday traffic, take extra precautions. Buckle up, pay attention, drive sober and obey the speed limit.”
