March 13th, 2024- The Decatur Police Department, in collaboration with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation, is launching a traffic safety campaign aimed at ensuring safer streets during the holiday weekend.

“With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Sunday this year, we anticipate heightened alcohol consumption both on the day itself and throughout the weekend,” stated Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer of the Decatur Police Department. “We implore everyone to celebrate responsibly, starting with a solid plan for a sober ride home before heading out.”

St. Patrick’s Day has posed a significant risk on American roads due to increased alcohol consumption and drunk driving. Between 2017 and 2021, there were 272 lives lost in drunk-driving crashes over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday period.

The Decatur Police Department will not only target alcohol and cannabis-impaired drivers but also prioritize seat belt enforcement, particularly during nighttime hours when seat belt usage tends to decline.

To further emphasize safety precautions, authorities offer essential tips:

  • Driving under the influence, whether alcohol or drugs, is never acceptable. Designate a sober driver or utilize public transportation or ride-sharing services for a safe journey home.
  • If you encounter an impaired driver on the road, promptly alert law enforcement.
  • Intervene if a friend is about to drive impaired. Take away their keys and arrange for their safe transportation home.
  • Always remember to buckle up, as seat belts save lives.

The St. Patrick’s Day enforcement campaign is made possible by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
