Decatur unemployment rate increases slightly over last year

May 28, 2024 – The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Decatur increased +0.1 percentage point to 5.7 percent in April 2024 from 5.6 percent in April 2023, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES).

Statewide, over-the-year, total nonfarm jobs increased in ten metropolitan areas and decreased in four for the year ending April 2024,  Over-the-year, the unemployment rate increased in thirteen metropolitan areas, and decreased in one.

In Decatur, there were an estimated 2,496 unemployed people in the labor force in April 2024.

The number of total nonfarm jobs in the Decatur metro area decreased by -300 compared to last April.

Employment increased in the Manufacturing (+200), Government (+100) and Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities (+100) sectors.

Payrolls were unchanged in Retail Trade, Wholesale Trade, Information, Other Services, Financial Activities and Professional-Business Services.

Payroll employment decreased in Mining-Construction (-300), Private Education-Health Services (-300) and Leisure-Hospitality (-100) between April 2023 and April 2024.
