July 22, 2024 -Youth with a Positive Direction (YWAPD) is celebrating 33 years of providing summer programs to youth in the community.
YWAPD is an after school and summer program that runs every week from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and is free for all ages. The program, which is housed at Main Street Church of the Living God at 2000 N Main St., provides classes in dance, STEM, cooking, Drumline, Music/Choir, and tennis classes twice a week. The program also provides free breakfast and lunch for participants.
CEO Margaret Walker says Youth with a Positive Direction looks to provide a safe environment for area children and to help spread positivity into the world. “I began YWAPD because my children, at that time, they weren’t into sports and so we decided to go directly into the arts. I just thought about what my mom taught us and made the most of it.”
Typically, the program serves over 175 children a year, providing job skills training, homework assistance, mentoring, peer leadership and community service initiatives.
