December 15, 2024 – The Decatur Police Department recently concluded a 6-week focused enforcement operation targeting distracted driving, with a particular emphasis on cell phone usage behind the wheel. Over the course of the operation, officers issued 108 citations to drivers who were found violating distracted driving laws.

The initiative aimed to increase awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and to remind motorists of their responsibility to prioritize safety on the road.

Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents and fatalities, as it diverts a driver’s attention from the critical task of operating a vehicle. Using a cell phone while driving—whether for texting, calling, or browsing—significantly increases the likelihood of a crash. When a driver takes their eyes off the road for just five seconds at highway speeds, they effectively travel the length of a football field blindfolded.
The Decatur Police Department urges all drivers to put away their phones and remain alert to ensure the safety of themselves, their passengers, and others on the road.
“Safety is a shared responsibility,” said Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel. “By eliminating distractions, we can all contribute to reducing preventable accidents.”
