March 9, 2026 – A new documentary exploring the life and legacy of James Millikin will premiere this spring with several public screenings in Decatur.
The film, The Original Big Blue: The Life & Times of James Millikin, was produced by Jim Wilkerson, president of James Millikin Homestead, Inc. and a 1997 graduate of Millikin University.
The documentary examines Millikin’s life as an entrepreneur, civic leader and founder of the university, using historical accounts, community perspectives and archival materials. It traces his background from Scotch-Irish and Pennsylvania roots to his career as a livestock trader, real estate investor and banker in Central Illinois.
According to the filmmakers, the documentary highlights Millikin’s contributions to Decatur and his role in establishing Millikin University, which was founded April 30, 1901.
The film also explores the history of the Millikin family mansion at 125 N. Pine St., now preserved as the James Millikin Homestead.
Public screenings are scheduled at multiple locations, including the Albert Taylor Theatre inside Shilling Hall on April 29 at 6 p.m. and May 3 at 2 p.m., as well as at Lincoln Square Theatre on May 15 at 6 p.m. and May 16 at 2 p.m.
The screenings coincide with milestone anniversaries for the university and the homestead. The James Millikin Homestead is marking its 150th anniversary in 2026, while Millikin University will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding this year.
