March 16, 2026— The Decatur Public Transit System has launched a new contactless fare collection platform across its fixed-route bus network, introducing mobile ticketing, reloadable smart cards and account-based fare technology in partnership with Modeshift.

The system, called Decatur Transit Pay, replaces many traditional paper and cash-based processes with digital tools designed to make riding the bus easier and faster. Riders can now plan trips, purchase fares and validate rides through a smartphone app or by using a reloadable smart card.

“This launch represents a major step forward in modernizing public transportation in Decatur,” said Lacie Elzy. “By introducing flexible, cashless payment options and digital tools, we’re making it easier for residents to access reliable transportation while positioning our transit system for long-term growth.”

The Decatur Transit Pay platform includes several new tools for riders:

  • Mobile App: Available for Apple and Android devices, allowing riders to book trips, purchase fares and validate rides using QR codes.

  • Web Portal: Riders can manage accounts, purchase passes and plan trips online.

  • Smart Pay Accounts: Personal accounts allow riders to track trips, view purchase history and add funds.

  • Reloadable Smart Cards: Tap-and-go cards provide an option for riders who prefer not to use a smartphone.

  • Real-Time Data Insights: The platform generates ridership data to help improve route planning and service efficiency.

According to Miroslav Katsarov, the technology also creates a digital foundation for future transit improvements.

“By implementing a flexible, account-based platform today, DPTS is creating the digital foundation to extend these benefits to existing services, including paratransit later this year,” Katsarov said.

Riders can download the Decatur Transit Pay app, create an account online, or call 217-424-2821 for assistance.

While the new system is now live, buses will continue accepting cash fares and existing monthly passes or punch cards for several months during the transition period.
