March 18, 2026– The Decatur Park District Board of Commissioners has approved construction of a new activity center designed for residents age 55 and older.

At its meeting Wednesday, March 18, the board approved a $10.33 million construction bid from Boeren-Russo for the development of a more than 37,000-square-foot facility. The center will be built adjacent to the existing Scovill Park West Activity Center.

District officials say the project is intended to address the needs of a growing older adult population and expand recreational and wellness opportunities. The facility is expected to include multiple activity rooms, an indoor walking track, pickleball courts, crafting and game spaces, and a large event area with capacity for up to 600 people. Plans also call for an outdoor deck connected to the event space.

The new center will complement existing services offered by the Park District, including health insurance counseling, meal programs, transportation-related assistance, and other resources aimed at supporting independence and quality of life for older residents.

Construction is expected to begin in May 2026, with completion anticipated in summer 2027.
