March 23, 2026– A longtime community tradition will take flight again April 18 as Kite Day returns to Sinawik Park.
The free event runs from noon to 4 p.m., with the first 100 children ages 12 and under receiving a free kite. The event is sponsored by the Decatur Park District, Hickory Point Bank, Early Bird Kiwanis and Golden K.
Organizers say the event is designed to provide a family-friendly afternoon of outdoor activity and community engagement. Local Kiwanis groups also support youth-focused initiatives such as Little Free Libraries and fishing programs.
The event also highlights Decatur’s connection to kite-making history. The city was once home to Hi-Flier Kites, founded in 1921 by Harvey Sellers. At its peak, the company produced up to 20,000 kites daily and distributed them worldwide before closing in 1981.
