April 7, 2026— A workshop celebrating spring wildflowers, birds, and nature education is set for April 11 in Decatur.
Spring Birds & Blooms will take place from 8 a.m. to noon at Rock Springs Nature Center. The event honors the legacy of Carolyn Mason, a devoted Master Naturalist whose passion for the natural world inspired others.
An optional birding hike will begin at 7 a.m., led by a local birding group. Participants will meet in the nature center parking lot, and the hike will take place rain or shine.
Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 8 a.m., followed by a series of presentations focused on gardening, birding, and outdoor photography. Topics include gardening with native plants, bird identification and appreciation, and smartphone photography techniques for nature enthusiasts. An optional hands-on session will also be offered to help participants download and use nature-related mobile apps.
The workshop will conclude with a guided nature hike at noon.
Organizers say the annual event is designed for all experience levels, including beginners, and aims to introduce participants to local landscapes and seasonal changes.
The cost to attend is $10, which includes breakfast. Advance registration is required by April 9 through the University of Illinois Extension website HERE.
