April 27, 2026 – Local unions and community members will gather tomorrow, April 28, to honor workers who have lost their lives or been injured on the job.
The Mid-Illinois Labor Council will host a Workers’ Memorial Day ceremony at the Macon County Workers’ Memorial Monument, located on the courthouse lawn. The event begins at 5:30 p.m.
Organizers say the annual observance coincides with the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which established workplace safety protections. The ceremony will include an honor guard, wreath laying, prayer, and a reading of names of workers from Macon County who died while working or living in the area.
Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is scheduled to speak. This year’s ceremony will also recognize Samuel Ward, a local union member who died in a workplace accident in 2025.
Organizers say the event is both a time of remembrance and a call to continue improving workplace safety.
