May 19, 2026 – State Representative Regan Deering is encouraging local students to participate in her summer reading program, “Reading Plants a Seed,” aimed at keeping children engaged in reading during the summer months.
The program is open to Kindergarten through fifth grade students who live in or attend school within Illinois’ 88th House District.
“Reading is a crucial part of everyday life, so I am happy to host this program again,” Deering said in a statement. “Joining the program is a great way for students to stay engaged in the learning process over the summer months. I hope all Kindergarten through 5th grade students will join me in reading this summer!”
To complete the program, students must read eight books over summer break. Parents or guardians are required to verify the books completed. Books longer than 150 pages may count as two books, and books read for other summer reading programs may also be applied toward the requirement.
Completed reading forms must be submitted electronically or mailed to Deering’s office by July 15. Online submissions are available through Rep. Deering’s website under the “Summer Reading” section of the Resources tab.
Paper submissions can be mailed to Rep. Regan Deering, 419 E. Ash Ave., Decatur, IL 62526.
Students who participate will receive an invitation to a certificate ceremony later this summer and will also receive an official Illinois House of Representatives certificate recognizing their achievement.
Additional information and electronic copies of the form are available by contacting Deering’s office at (217) 876-1968.
