May 19, 2026 – The City of Decatur’s Public Works Department will conduct routine fire hydrant flushing across the city from May 25 through June 22, 2026.
According to city officials, the flushing process is part of regular water system maintenance designed to remove sediment buildup and improve overall water quality. Residents may notice water crews working in neighborhoods throughout the month-long effort.
The city has provided an online flushing map showing affected areas. Hydrants marked in red indicate locations that still require flushing, while green indicates the process has been completed. The map is available through the City of Decatur water flushing map.
Officials are asking residents to minimize water use while flushing is taking place in their area.
Temporary water discoloration and slight drops in water pressure may occur during the process. City officials said the discoloration does not present any health or safety concerns.
Residents experiencing cloudy or discolored water are advised to wait about 15 minutes after flushing is complete before running cold water through a bathtub faucet or outdoor spigot. Water should then be run through other faucets until clear. If discoloration remains, residents should wait another 30 minutes and repeat the process.
The city also recommends residents avoid doing laundry until water runs clear, as discolored water may stain clothing. If staining occurs, officials advise against drying the clothing, as heat may permanently set the stain. Rewashing items with non-chlorine bleach or a rust-removing product may help remove discoloration from clothing and fixtures.
