July 1, 2026 – With dangerously high temperatures and humidity expected to continue across Illinois through the holiday weekend and into the remaining weeks of summer, the Illinois Commerce Commission is encouraging residents to take steps to stay cool while keeping energy costs under control.

“We want Illinoisans to stay cool and safe, without putting themselves at financial risk of being unable to afford their electric bills,” Illinois Commerce Commission Chairman Doug Scott said in a statement.

The ICC recommends several ways to reduce electricity use during periods of peak demand, including contacting utility providers about programs that reward customers for lowering energy use during high-demand hours.

Other recommendations include installing a programmable thermostat, scheduling routine air conditioner maintenance, replacing HVAC filters regularly, closing curtains or blinds to block sunlight, using ceiling or box fans to improve air circulation, and sealing gaps around doors and windows with caulk or weather stripping.

The commission also reminds consumers who may be struggling with utility costs that financial assistance programs are available through utility providers and other organizations to help eligible households manage their energy bills.
