July 7, 2021 – Jim Root has announced his intention of running for Sheriff’s Office in 2022. Below is a statement he released today:

“In 2017 I announced my candidacy for Macon County Sheriff because I was dedicated to serving this community and leading the Sheriff’s Office. After a two-and-a-half-year process, working tirelessly to correct the errors made during the 2018 election I was sworn in as Sheriff. This process has taken its toll on the community, my family, and me, but many have stood with me during this endeavor. July 1st marks my 25th year with the Sheriff’s Office and I intend to dedicate myself to this community and the Sheriff’s Office for four more years.

I don’t know what the future of law enforcement looks like with calls from the extreme to defund police and with how some in the media negatively portray us. But I do know the men and women who work at the Sheriff’s Office deserve to have a person who is willing to stand up for them in these trying times. I know the taxpayers in this County deserve to have a professional law enforcement service, willing and capable to respond when needed. I do know doing the right thing, even when no one is looking, is how the Macon County Sheriff’s Office will operate under my administration.

As Sheriff, I have already moved the department in a direction to improve the quality of services we provide. I will ensure the men and women who make the Sheriff’s Office a great place to work have the tools and training needed to move us into the future. I will work diligently to eliminate waste and make our department run more effectively and efficiently.

Above all else, I will protect and honor the oath I took to defend the constitution.

To continue in the direction that I have started, I am announcing that I will run for re-election in November 2022 for Macon County Sheriff.”
