October 11, 2026 – October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month in Illinois, with the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology encouraging residents to take steps to protect their personal information and online accounts.
State officials recommend using two-factor authentication, creating unique and strong passwords, keeping operating systems and internet browsers updated, and monitoring bank and credit accounts for suspicious activity.
Residents are also being warned about phishing, which can involve fraudulent emails, websites or phone calls designed to obtain personal information or install malicious software. Officials recommend being cautious with unexpected requests, suspicious links and offers that seem too good to be true.
More cybersecurity resources are available through the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology and Ready.gov’s cybersecurity resources.
