October 27, 2026 – Residents can give their Halloween pumpkins a second life at a free, family-friendly recycling event next month in Decatur.
University of Illinois Extension will host its annual Pumpkin Smash from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, November 7, at the site of the former pool in Fairview Park.
The event encourages residents to keep pumpkins out of landfills by breaking them down for composting. Participants can choose from a variety of ways to smash, squish and break apart their pumpkins.
Master Naturalist volunteers will also be on-site to share information about composting and conservation.
“Pumpkin Smash is about more than just having fun; it’s an opportunity to show how small sustainable choices can make a big difference,” said Stephanie Hale, agriculture program coordinator for University of Illinois Extension.
“Instead of sending pumpkins to the landfill, we’re giving them a second life by turning them into a resource for our community and our environment,” Hale said.
The event is free, and registration is not required. Families can also drop off pumpkins at any time during the event.
