June 3, 2022- Ameisha Jarett talked about her upcoming internship with the Decatur Police Department she will be doing, through the Jerry J. Dawson Civic Leadership Institute.
Jarett is a security officer with MacArthur High School. With the gun violence and the youth acting out, she sees it as a necessity to reach the youth community at an early age. And she believes she can do that through law enforcement.
“Some of our kids are out of control, and if I can start with them young, and work up until they are older, maybe we can make a little change,” Jarett said. “Get them out of the streets someway.”
Jarett is well aware that as a woman in a male dominated profession, she may serve as that representation in the community, and she fully embraces that.
“I do want my respect, but at the same time I know I got to earn it as well; it’s not just given to me,” Jarett said. “Maybe, hopefully, for the other young women that want to be in the Decatur police field, but maybe scared because they feel they aren’t tough enough or strong enough, maybe I can break that through and be a difference. Like, well she is only 4’11. She can do it so why can’t. So that is the goal to try to push for more females because it is mostly all male.”
