Macon/Piatt Regional Office of Education to Spotlight Poverty in June

May 25, 2022 – The Macon/Piatt Regional Office of Education is hosting several events this summer to bring awareness of poverty in our communities.

Each event will be held at Richland Community College, beginning with “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” on June 7 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Presented by Ruben Perez, this discussion will highlight cognitive approaches that we see applied by educators, policymakers, employers and service providers.

The following day, June 8, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Perez will once again lead a discussion at Richland Community College, located at 3357 Howard Brown Blvd., Decatur, IL. She plans to spotlight the book, “Emotional Poverty” by Ruby K. Payne, PhD. This session focuses on how to reduce anger, anxiety, and violence in the classroom.

On June 14, the University of Illinois will be leading a poverty simulation from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in salons one and two at RCC. These are located at 1 College Park, Decatur, IL.
