November 10, 2022- Community members gathered at the Good Samaritan Inn for the annual Empty Bowl event.

This year’s event was sponsored by “Souperhero Samaritan” Stripmasters Services, Inc.

At the event, meals prepared by the Good Samaritan Inn’s head chef, Rachel Wear, were sold for $10. Attendees were given the choice of Beef Brisket Chili (gluten-free), Fire Roasted Veggie Chili (gluten-free, vegan), and Artisan Mac ‘n Cheese as well as cornbread & dessert.

Attendees were able to dine in or take their meals to go. The meals were pre-packaged in microwave-safe containers.

In addition to food being served, those in attendance were treated to a live performance by artist Tracy D. Osborne.

It wasn’t just the food and the music that motivated the community to attend the event. It was also the selling of Good Samaritan merchandise and handmade ceramics made by local artists and students from Millikin University’s Art Department.

“Our students spend a lot of time and effort crafting these bowls because they are passionate about helping others,” Jennifer Holt, Assistant Professor of Ceramics & Sculpture said. “Students not only further develop their craft, but also learn how to use their artistic skills to positively impact the community.”

One of the students from Millikin University’s Art Department, Sydney Finch, who made one of the ceramic bowls, was actually in attendance.

“I wanted to come and buy my bowl back, and come and support the community and this event, and who doesn’t love food,” Finch said.

Limited edition 40th Anniversary and 2022 Empty Bowl t-shirts and sweatshirts from Uptopbromedia’s Grant Webber were sold. Uptopbromedia’s Grant Webber did live screen printing at the event.

Nicky Besser, executive director of the Good Samaritan Inn, was pleased with the turnout, and is already eager to do it again next year.

“I am blown away by the efforts of the volunteers, and the community coming together to support us,” Besser said. “It’s been a super fun event, and we are really excited it is going on, and are happy to do it again.” besser said.

All proceeds went towards the mission of feeding hungry children and families 365 days a year.

“It’s such a fun event for the whole community with new partners and friends getting involved every year,” Besser said. “Where else can you get a chef-prepared meal for $10 and feed hungry children and families at the same time?”
