November 6-The Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Department of Natural Resources are reminding drivers to stay alert for deer as peak mating season continues through December. Deer are more active at dawn and dusk, increasing the risk of collisions.

In 2024, Illinois reported 14,436 deer-related crashes. Of these, 13,733 caused property damage, 698 caused injuries, and five were fatal. Nearly half occurred in October through December, with November being the most dangerous month. Most crashes happened in rural areas and at twilight or nighttime.

Drivers are advised to stay in their lane and brake firmly if a deer appears. Swerving can cause more serious accidents. Watch for reflective eyes along the roadside, slow down if deer are seen nearby, and remember that others may follow.

If a collision occurs, pull over safely, turn on hazard lights, and call 911. Do not approach or move an injured deer. For information on reporting or claiming a deer, click HERE.
