October 20, 2026 -Millikin University’s School of Music has introduced Applied Digital Music as a new instrument of study, expanding opportunities for students interested in combining music performance with technology and production.
The program launched in the fall 2026 semester and is designed for musicians and producers who use digital audio workstations, computers and controllers to create and perform music.
Eligible students can declare Applied Digital Music as their principal instrument or pursue it as a secondary instrument. The program includes individualized instruction and masterclasses to help students develop technical skills and artistic expression.
Millikin officials say the new offering reflects the growing role of digital technology in the music industry, including live performances, recording and collaborative music production.
Alex Manfredo, instructor of music and coordinator of commercial music, said the program gives students additional time to develop their skills through private instruction and masterclasses.
The university says the program also responds to changes in music education, as more students enter college with experience creating and producing music using phones, laptops and other digital tools.
Applied Digital Music adds to Millikin’s existing music offerings, providing students with another option to develop their musicianship and technology skills in preparation for careers in the evolving music industry.
