September 9, 2024 – The Children’s Museum of Illinois and Millikin University have teamed up for a new program introducing middle school girls aged 5th through 8th grade to the world of chemistry through fun, hands-on experiments, and activities.
ChemGirls is designed to spark curiosity and inspire a love for science that could lead to future careers in STEM fields. This unique, girls-only class is led by female scientists and staff who will guide girls through experiments in a fun and supportive learning environment.
The program has already proved popular with all of the classes currently at capacity. There is a waitlist available by clicking HERE.
The first sold-out class on Saturday focused on Fun with Food Science! Participating girls learn about the scientific method while testing out some curious and delicious chemistry experiments. Participants separated the colors of food dyes, melted marshmallows, made Boba tea with an edible spherification experiment, and made homemade ice cream.
The next class will be held on October 6 at Children’s Museum of Illinois Classroom and will be All About Eggs! Girls will perform chemistry experiments using multiple techniques with eggs. The third class will take place on November 2 at Millikin University Chem Lab in Leighty-Tabor Science Center for Candy Chemistry! Girls will be scientists who conduct experiments to learn about how time and temperature impact some candy concoctions.
This is a grant-funded program thanks to a gift from the She-Gave Women’s Giving Circle.
