September 11, 2025 – The Kiwanis Early Birds, Golden K Kiwanis, and the Decatur Housing Authority (DHA) celebrated the opening of a new Little Free Library at Decatur Housing Authority, with the goal of supporting literacy and community engagement.

The DHA held a ribbon cutting Thursday at their location on E. Locust to celebrated the installation.

The Little Free Library is a free book-sharing box where members of the community are encouraged to take a book or leave a book. The initiative is intended to promote accessible reading opportunities for residents of all ages.

“As an avid reader myself, it’s a great thing to do for children. It opens worlds, ideas and things that they may not be exposed to in their households. It opens a whole new perspective for some children.”, said Shara LeBeau, Executive Director of the Decatur Housing Authority.

Members of the public can contribute to the effort by donating books. Donations are being accepted at both the Children’s Museum of Decatur and the Decatur Housing Authority lobby.
