April 30, 2026 – History of the Heartland is inviting the community to celebrate local heritage during its 7th annual Historic Preservation Week, set for May 16th through the 22nd in Decatur.

The week-long series highlights the organization’s mission of preserving historic structures, homes, and the stories of the people who shaped the region. Founder Ayn Owens says the event is an opportunity to showcase the community’s rich history and the efforts of volunteers who help keep it alive.

Events begin Saturday, May 16 with the annual History Showcase, featuring activities and open houses at several local sites including the Millikin Homestead, Governor Oglesby Mansion, Mueller Museum, Staley Museum, Culver House, and the Macon County Museum. Most events are free, with donations accepted.

On Sunday, May 17, four downtown churches will open their doors from 1 to 4 p.m. for the Stained-Glass Stories Tour, offering visitors a closer look at historic architecture and design.

This year also includes self-guided tours of downtown historical sites and public artwork, available on the organization’s Facebook page beginning May 16, allowing participants to explore at their own pace.

The week wraps up with the sixth annual Living Legends event on Thursday, May 21 at Doherty’s Pub & Pins. The event will honor St. Teresa High School football legends with a panel discussion featuring former players, coaches, and announcers sharing memories. The free event begins at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30.

More information, including daily history features, is available on the History of the Heartland Facebook page or by calling 217-791-1385.
