October 20, 2026 – Decatur real estate agent Michael Sexton has announced his candidacy for Decatur City Council, citing fiscal responsibility, public safety and economic development as key priorities.
Sexton says he has more than 30 years of experience in local real estate, working with families, small businesses, property owners and investors. He says that experience has given him insight into property values, property taxes, crime and challenges facing businesses seeking to locate or expand in Decatur.
Sexton was elected twice as a Decatur Township trustee and has served on several local boards, including the Children’s Museum of Illinois, Decatur Public Library and Decatur Area Arts Council. He currently serves on the James Millikin Homestead Board and the city’s Historical Area Sites Commission.
His campaign platform includes auditing city expenditures, reducing wasteful spending, maintaining balanced budgets, streamlining regulations for businesses and prioritizing funding for police, fire protection and infrastructure, including streets, water and sewer services.
In announcing his candidacy, Sexton said he wants city government to use taxpayer dollars wisely while focusing on essential public services and community safety.
Sexton is seeking support from Decatur residents and says he plans to meet with community members during the campaign.
