IDPH Recommends Families Rethink Holiday Celebrations

November 6, 2020 – In the midst of a spike in COVID-19 cases, the Illinois Department of Public Health is saying that families need to rethink how they typically celebrate the holidays.

The IDPH says family gatherings, where you see relatives you haven’t been around since the pandemic started have been a significant source of spreading COVID-19.  State Public Health Director Ngozi Ezike says it may be too much of a risk to get everyone together for the holidays this year.

“We all want to be with our friends and family for the holidays, but perhaps this holiday, as we have already done for most of 2020, we are going to have to do it COVID-style, and that means virtual.  We will have to stay at home and forego the large gatherings so that we will have future events that we can be with our friends and family,” said Ezike.

Ezike says that even if you are not showing symptoms that you could be carrying the virus and possibly spread it to those who are high-risk.  There are several sources of exposure no matter how you choose to travel.
