The ‘greatest’ Christmas movie can be debated to no end as everyone has an opinion, right? The ‘most popular’ Christmas movie can be found using data from multiple sources. As such, the folks at Preply did some of their own to figure out the most popular in American and by each state.
For this study, we analyzed search trends for keywords related to 115 of the highest-rated and highest-grossing holiday movies of all time, according to Rotten Tomatoes and Box Office Mojo. We then narrowed down the list to the top 25 most-searched-for films and evaluated how popular they were in each state.
So, what did they find? Home Alone was the most popular across the 50 states followed by 2018’s The Grinch and Elf. Break it down by state: Indiana loved Elf while Illinois was all about Home Alone. That kind of makes sense as the film is base in Chicago.
